In 1918 Alvin York became a national hero when word reached the US of his personal capture of 132 German soldiers in the Argonne Forest of France. The subsequent movie, with Gary Cooper portraying York, made his seem larger than life. In this book, author Lee gives a much more complete portrait of Alvin York, presenting a few faults along with his virtues. In the end, Alvin York exemplified the traditional values of an agrarian America that was in his own day receding into the past.
