When F-16 pilot Scott Grady was downed over Bosnia, an immediate rescue mission was begun. It involved nearly 100 aircraft to remove him to safety in broad daylight. Another pilot, that of the only F-117 Stealth plane to be shot down, was also rescued. The USAF's elite Special Operations Group is the product of many years of hard experience, but only now is it possible to reveal how many of its famous missions were conducted.
The authors investigate the origins of SOG and the experience of early rescue missions in Vietnam, including the rescue now made famous in the book and movie "BAT21". Proportionate in size but larger in scope, the 1970 Son Tay Prison Raid failed to achieve its objective, but it demonstrates how far techniques and equipment had evolved. From disaster at Desert 1 to the Gulf War, Bosnia, and the tragedy in Somalia, Chariots of the Damned takes you on an edge-of-your-seat ride into some of the most incredible battles of recent times. Hard cover. 211 pages. Color photos and Follow-The-Action maps. A great book!
