THE OLD BREED: A History of the 1st Marine Division in World War II. This is the classic by George W. McMillan originally published in 1949 by the Infantry Jounral Press. "THE OLD BREED" is considered one of the finest division histories ever produced for an American unit.
Comprehensive in its coverage, the history traces the 1st Marine Division from its activation in Feb. 1941 through training in the U.S. to initial combat in Guadalcanal. After a lengthy detailed account of the savage fighting on Guadalcanal, the book covers Cape Gloucester (New Britain), Peleliu, Okinawa, and finally duty in North China.
