Originally published in 1956, this is a very detailed account of the operations of the famed 2nd New Zealand Division in the first half of the Italian campaign. It also covers in broader detail the operations of the British 8th Army, and the opposing German forces.

It begins with the rebuilding of the division, the attacks on the Sangro river line, the fierce battle for Orsogna, the preparations for the capture of Monte Cassino, the bombing of the Abbey and the numerous attacks of Feb. & March 1944 until the stalemate of 26th March 1944. Includes the New Zealand indigenous Maori Battalion which fought heroically and with distinction in North Africa and Italy. 387 pages, 54 photos, 33 detailed battle maps.
