The reduction of Rabaul was accomplished by a gigantic double envelopment which required closely coordinated land, sea and air operations. This highly researched account explains in detail the part played by the US Army ground forces and, by summary, the contributions of all forces and nations participating.

The volume analyzes the techniques the Allies employed to bypass fortified positions and seize more weakly defended but strategically important areas, or as stated by General MacArthur, to "hit 'em where they ain't." As a result, they took a heavy toll on the enemy's resources, established the technique of bypassing and isolating his strongholds, including finally Rabaul itself, and threw the enemy on the defensive.

The key combat operations of the following units are detailed: 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 158th Infantry Regiment, Americal Division, 25th Infantry Division, 32nd Infantry Division, 37th Infantry Division, 43rd Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 112th Cavalry Regiment, US Marine 1st, 2nd and 3rd Divisions, Naval Task Forces and Allied warships, Seabees, Australian and New Zealand units.
