Click to EnlargeThey were called Jeep Carriers, Woolworth Carriers, Kaisers Coffins, and many other names. But when they were called into action, Escort Carriers became essential to the American and British Fleets in carrying the fight to the enemy. Escort carriers were constructed with merchant ship hull designs with the addition of a flight deck. CVE's, as they were eventually designated, were used in multiple roles: convoy escort, invasion support, aircraft ferries. One of the most effective uses was for anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic. Escort Carriers in Action (SC). They handled missions such as convoy escort, close air support operations during amphibious landings and anti-submarine warfare, freeing the Fleet Carriers for offensive operations. Over 100 photos, 13 color paintings, numerous line dwgs, 50 pgs. and full color plates of six different CVE class ships.
