Summary: The 4th Marine Regiment was activated in 1911, served along the Mexican coast 1914-45, Dominican Republic 1916-22. In 1927 it began its most famous duty with service in Shanghai, China for nearly 15 years. Ordered to the Philippines in Nov. 1941, it fought at Bataan & Corregidor until May 1942. Reactivated in Feb. 1944 from veterans of the disbanded USMC Raider Battalions, the new 4th saw combat at Emirau, Guam, Okinawa and the Occupation of Japan. 1989 reprint of 1960 edition done by the USMC Historical Branch. The 4th Marines, lost when Corregidor was overrun in 1942, was reformed in February 1944 almost entirely from Marine Raider ranks. The 4th Marines fought on and became some of the first American forces to set foot on Japanese home soil on August 31st, 1945. 504 pages, 60 photos, 33 maps. 6" x 9" volume.
