SAIPAN: BEGINNING OF THE END. 2nd Marine Division, 4th Marine Division, 27th Infantry Division and the 708th,762nd & 766th Tank Battalions.

Click to EnlargeSaipan Island, the Marianas, was needed for a B-29 airbase to bomb Japan. The 2nd & 4th Marine Divisions and the 27th Infantry Division fought 3 weeks non-stop to take the Island, including the LARGEST TANK BATTLE in the Pacific Islands. This official Marine Corps battle and campaign history originally written by the U.S. Marine Corps Historical Section also provides fairly good coverage of the 27th Infantry Division as well (although the USMC and Army Generals were at odds). In a ghastly footnote to the battle, an estimated 22,000 civilians committed mass suicide on July 9 '44. Egged on by Japanese soldies, whole families threw themselves of the cliffs at Marpi Point. This edition is an exact reprint of the highest quality with large 8.5"x11.25" cloth volumes colored blood-red and embellished with rich gold lettering. Two columns of text per page and exceptionally well illustrated with photographs, maps (including copies of ORIGINAL battle maps) & drawings.
